What is modesty?
First Timothy 2:9 states, "Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and good sense...". It is made apparent in The Bible that we should be modest, but what does that mean? Modesty isn't only about what you wear; it is a lifestyle. We are to be modest in dress, in speaking, and in our behavior. The meaning of the word 'modesty' has a lot to do with fairness, humilty, and what is acceptable.
The most common thought of thing when you bring up the word 'modesty' is how a person dresses. We set standards and rules and every person has different feelings about what is considered appropriate or "modest". What exactly is "too short" or "too revealing"? The Bible mentions how we should dress with modest clothing in oppose to expensive apparel and elaborate hairstyles; does this mean we shouldn't fix our hair or spend money on clothes? Nothing is wrong with jewelry or looking nice, the problem is when you exalt these things over what really matters in life: God, family, helping others... In other words, focus on the inside and not so much on what you are wearing.
Speaking with modesty is an important principle. Instead of boasting, gossip, and unkind words we should speak with humility and kindness. There is few things greater than a humble spirit, slow to speak and quick to listen. we should conduct all our speech with modesty.
Especially, we should conduct ourselves with modest behavior. To be fair, unshowy, tolerate, reserved, and humble are all examples of a modest behavior;
placing value on acting Christ-like and serving others instead of living lavishly and putting esteem on our possessions. A modest lifestyle with God is far greater than an extravagant lifestyle without purpose.
In conclusion, living modestly is being acceptable in dress, speech, and behavior. Our focus should always be on Christ before ourselves. A life of modesty should be a common goal we strive for.
